Effects of Freezing in the Eye(Glaucoma)

Abstract
Cryosurgery for the treatment of glaucoma was first reported by Bietti in 1950. Several authors published their experiences with this new method; these authors owed that, when subfreezing temperatures are applied to the area. of the ciliary body of normal rabbit eyes, the intraocular pressure of these eyes will fall due to a partial destruction of the ciliary epithelium.
Therefore a clinical evaluation of this new technique seemed to be indicated.
Cryosurgery was performed on 21 glaucomatous, eyes.
The best control of intraocular pressure was obtained in eyes with aphakic .glaucoma; 7 showed normal tensions, 3 were borderline.
This new procedure was not effective in eyes with absolute and congenital .glaucomas.
Among 21 glaucomatous eyes received cyclocryothermy, 11 showed normal tensions (52%), 4 were borderline and 6 were not effective.
